INTERACTIVE PANEL DIALOGUE ON THE RIGHTS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES - Intervention of Slovenia

(Friday, 4 March 2011)

Mr. President,

Slovenia aligns itself with the statement of the European Union. In our national capacity, we wish to reaffirm our commitment and engagement in support of the full realization of the rights of persons with disabilities as enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), and stand ready to work together with partners in order to achieve this important goal.

We would like to thank the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights for preparing a comprehensive thematic study on the role played by international cooperation in support of national efforts to implement the CRPD, to which also Slovenia contributed its submission.

Slovenia is active in the field of international cooperation in support for the realization of the rights of persons with disabilities on the regional level - in the European Co-ordination Forum of the Council of Europe and in the Disability High Level Group of the European Commission - as well as on the universal level: we had a member in the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the period 2009/2010 and are active in the Group of friends of the CRPD here in Geneva.

In the field of humanitarian assistance, Slovenia established a project for the rehabilitation of children with disabilities in Gaza. In the framework of this project, up to the end of 2010, 62 children were treated, rehabilitated and equipped with medical-technical equipment. Furthermore, 10 physiotherapists from Gaza received training in Slovenia to enable them to give further assistance to these children throughout the whole process of their rehabilitation.

Slovenia welcomes the intention of Mexico and New Zealand to present a resolution on the rights of persons with disabilities at this Council session, focusing on the role of international cooperation in support of national efforts for the realization of the rights of persons with disabilities.

Thank you, Mr. President
